    Explore essential oils

    Using essential oils in the bath is a great way to stimulate the olfactory system. The molecules of the oils are small enough to be absorbed through the skin and enter the bloodstream rapidly, and are then carried to all parts of the body.
    Try the following potent plant remedies.

    Juniper berry (Juniperus communis)
    The spicy aroma of juniper helps to strengthen and fortify the spirit during times of low energy, anxiety, and emotional overload. It is detoxifying, with stimulating and antiviral effects. Juniper helps to aid nervous tension and pain associated with rheumatism due to its analgesic properties. Bathing in juniper essential oil can also help expel uric acid from the system.

    Avoid using juniper during pregnancy and if you suffer from kidney disease. Juniper can also cause skin irritation; be sure to use with a carrier such as oil or salts.

    Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
    Rosemary’s versatility allows for use in respiratory and circulatory disorders, as well as muscular and rheumatic complaints. The oil can be used through inhalation, massage, steam, or diffuser for colds and flu. It is great in the bath for arthritis and muscular pain.
    Avoid rosemary during pregnancy and do not use if you suffer from epilepsy, as it may trigger seizures in some people with this condition.

    Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
    With its sweet woody-balsamic scent, this oil helps focus the mind and relieves anxiety, nervous tension, and stress. Avoid using cedarwood during pregnancy.

    Roman camomile (Anthemis nobilis)
    A sweet, fresh, fruity fragrance that is great in the bath if you are feeling stressed and anxious. Camomile is also helpful for tension headaches, insomnia, and melancholy.
    Camomile is excellent for dry, sensitive, and allergic skin. Avoid using camomile during the first trimester of pregnancy.

    Relaxing bathtub recipes

    Remember that classic rock n’ roll song: “Splish splash, I was taking a bath, long about a Saturday night…\”? Great advice! To make your own relaxing tub-time concoction, try one of these soaks.

    Moving and a-grooving muscle relaxation bath
    2 drops spruce (Picea glauca)
    3 drops juniper
    6 drops cedarwood
    2 cups (500 mL) Epsom salts

    Rocking and a-rolling feeling fatigued bath
    10 drops rosemary
    2 cups (500 mL) Dead Sea salts

    Reelin’ with the feelin’ stress-less bath
    3 drops orange (Citrus sinensis)
    3 drops lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)
    3 drops camomile
    2 cups (500 mL) sea salt

    Put the salts in a bowl, add essential oils, and stir in thoroughly. You can also add a tablespoon of oil such as organic olive or sunflower oil if you like for extra moisturizing. Use two cups of the salts in a bath, or use one cup and store the remainder of the salts in a sealed glass jar.

    Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate)
    When used in the bath, Epsom salts can help to remove toxins from the body, relax the nervous system and muscles, and reduce swelling of sprains and strains.

    Sea salt
    Sea salts are naturally high in sodium chloride and minerals beneficial to the skin and body. These salts are created by taking sea water and evaporating all the moisture, leaving the residual minerals from that water. They are perfect to soothe frayed nerves and remove unwanted energies that may be lingering after a bad day.

    Dead Sea salt
    Dead Sea salts are extra rich in minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium chloride. They are praised for their ability to help combat stress, and when used in a bath can help to calm the nervous system, increase circulation, and energize the body. After an intense workout they can help relax muscles and ease stiffness. Dead Sea salts help to balance skin moisture and decrease fluid retention, and so work well to ease itchy, dry skin.
