Get Active This Week with Bike to Work Week

May 28 to June 1 is Bike to Work Week. Read about what the event is about and how to register. It’s easy!

Get those pedals moving. May 28 to June 1 is Bike to Work Week in BC!

It’s a BC event, but Canadians across the country can still enjoy the benefits of cycling to work.

Originally started in 1995 with a core group of about 500 participants in Victoria, the initiative has become an annual event among communities throughout BC. Since its inception, it has encouraged thousands of British Columbians to trade their cars for bikes for their morning commutes.

Last year, the event attracted more than 15,000 participants in 18 communities across the province. Bike to Work BC, the nonprofit organization responsible for coordinating the event, estimates that participants biked 727,753 km and saved 168,268 kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

It’s not too late to register!

Go to the Bike to Work Week website to see if your BC community is officially participating in the program and to find a local community coordinator. If your community isn’t listed, you can still register yourself, and/or your workplace — even if it means being a team of one.

    Program goals

Bike to Work Week aims to get people fit, having fun, and being kinder to the environment. Health Canada recommends that adults accumulate at least 2 1/2 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week and that children and youth accumulate at least 60 minutes per day. Most adults can easily achieve these goals with a 15 to 30-minute commute to and from work.

Not only is cycling an enjoyable alternative to sitting in traffic each day, but by biking to work you’ll also be putting more money into your pocket instead of spending it at the gas station.

    Connecting communities

Bike to Work BC provides outreach and training to BC communities each year and provides resources and support to increase participation. Their future goals include evaluating existing community programs and implementing Bike to School programs.
